Overview of Job Description

Third Street is an investment management firm and family office serving a multi-generational, high-net-worth family with diverse investment interests. In addition to investment management, the office directs the accounting, tax, treasury, estate planning coordination, legal and risk management needs of the family. The family owns and operates North American Properties. Third Street is seeking a Director, Family Office to lead the tax, treasury, operations, and financial planning strategy for the family and related family entities in a team-oriented and confidential environment. The Director, Family Office will have direct reports and will work closely with the  Chairman, President, Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President, Senior Director, Finance and Director, Tax.

Duties and Responsibilities

In order to perform daily duties and responsibilities, the Director, Family Office must:

Develop and implement the family office strategic investment and operational plan

  • Develop and oversee the management and strategic plan of the family office
  • Establish and maintain a financial and operating environment focused on the family’s core values

Oversight of all family assets, including investment accounts, properties, trusts and other interests

  • Liaison with external advisors – lawyers, trustees, accountants, and other advisors impacting family-directed strategies and initiatives
  • Manage the preparation of accurate and timely filings of all family-related partnership, trust, gift, and individual tax returns
  • Proactively identify and implement efficient tax planning strategies for high net worth individuals and their related entities, including trusts and partnerships
  • Analyze tax efficiency of investments and structures to minimize tax burden
  • Significant interaction with family members on their individual tax planning and cash flow needs

Lead the production of family financial statements and cash flow analysis

  • Create a portfolio view of all investments, including liquid portfolio, passive private equity, and real estate portfolios
  • Create top level dashboards that include the value delivered, tax and cashflow for family members
  • Oversee the general ledger, QuickBooks and/or Sage Intacct, of various family members and entities
  • Oversee the preparation of the family balance sheet

  • Analyze expense and tax burden on portfolios to plan cash flow, working with family members and Senior Director, Finance to plan for future cash needs
  • Provide cash management reports to family members annually, including a reconciliation by account on major gifts, investments, and spending

Oversee Trust Management, Estate Planning and Entity Governance

  • Work with family members and outside advisors to effectively and pro-actively manage trusts and estate planning for the family
  • Work with President and COO to ensure that all internal governance documents are up to date and acceptable to the family 

Monitor Internal Controls

  • Routinely handles confidential information with a high level of client service, integrity, discretion and respect for confidential information are essential
  • Ensure proper document retention, organization of investment / insurance / tax / trust documentation
  • Effectively coordinate money movement and payment of expenses

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related area. A combination of a CPA and J.D. with an Estate Gift Background is preferred but at a minimum a CPA or J.D. is required.
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in at least two of the following: accounting, treasury, financial planning and analysis, compliance or law.
  • Broad experience and understanding of partnerships, trusts and various legal entities.
  • Experience managing a team
